Leadership Development: Caring Is Not Enough
“People don’t care how much you know, till they know how much you care.”
Sound familiar?
Is it important to show the people you care?
Absolutely.
But often our way of “caring” is to advice dump.
“What I would do…”
“What you should do…”
You interpret it as caring, and they may see it at, as a botched attempt to connect.
Maybe you’ve even experienced it when talking with your teenager?
If we “care” about someone we will be courageous for them.
2 Ways To Be Courageous In A Conversation
1. Open up about a struggle. Past or Current. When you talk about a failure you had in your life, it makes you look more human, and a deeper connection is made.
What makes Steve Jobs more human? His success or struggles?
2. Don’t focus on “being perfect.” Focus on “being present” When you concentrate on being perfect you are scheming, and you can get lost in trying to “sound smart.”
Before people know that you care, be courageous and establish a connection.
