I recently had the opportunity to stay at the longest-running five-star, five-diamond, hotel Resort in the United States, The Broadmoor, while I was serving as the opening keynote speaker for a conference.

This beautiful hotel is rich with history and inspiring views of nature. The service reminded me of Disney World, every staff member was pleasant, took great pride in their respective roles, and was willing to consistently “go the extra mile” for me and their other guests.

It got me thinking.

1. How do these staff members stay motivated to provide this level of service consistently?

2. How do they combat complacency?

While I don’t know the answer to these questions at The Broadmoor, but here is my guess.

1. They must go through some rigorous training process to determine who has a great attitude and can be coachable.

How often do companies get lured into hiring a great-looking resume, and then it slows down everyone when that person doesn’t play well with others or has a large ego.

2. Their identity is 5 Diamond Resort, not a goal.

What happens to humans when we reach a goal. We celebrate for a day, and then the invisible hand of complacency shows up. We slowly stop doing the daily activities that got us to our goal. You can see this happening all the time in health and fitness.

So, how do you stay motivated and avoid the invisible hand of complacency?

Connect your goals to your identity.

Your new identity will raise your standards and make old behaviors and attitudes unacceptable and incongruent with who you now are.

A special thank you to @TheBroadmoor.
