Move three projects a mile rather than a hundred an inch. Taking on too many projects is one of the main downfalls of a lot of companies and departments. As a result, focus, resources, and energy become scattered, and employees can feel like they are pulled in a hundred different directions trying to accomplish all these projects. When Steve Jobs went back to Apple and regained control as the CEO, he quickly discovered that they were trying to do too much. Apple was working on over 400 projects, and Steve's leadership and focus had trimmed it down to 10. "People think focus means saying yes to the thing you've got to focus on, But that's not what it means at all. It means saying no to the hundred other good ideas that there are. You have to pick carefully." Steve Jobs. Case Study in Leadership

While speaking in Las Vegas, I had the opportunity to go on Lip Smacking Foodie Tours, and it was awesome. But let me back up and tell you how it all happened. I was on my way to present and in the hallway of Mandalay Bay, Donald (owner of Lip Smacking Foodie Tours) handed me a brochure with people having fun eating at the best restaurants on the strip and delivered a concise pitch that made me curious. I naturally engaged with him and started to ask him questions. I almost lost track of time, I took his card and mentioned that if I were interested, I'd call him. After my program, I checked his company website, read some great reviews, and thought what the heck. I called him, and he registered me for that night's tour, and it was an enjoyable experience. After I had a fun time at fabulous restaurants with great people, I began to think about what can I learn from it. The Constant Gremlin of Comparison

At times I feel like I have a gremlin that sits on my shoulder and whispers these thoughts to me. You should be more successful, look at how successful Peter is, and you started together Why can't you figure it out, why does it feel like you are lost. James has it together Do you really think you are worthy of the success you desire?  Do you ever experience this?  And the more I listen, the more it keeps talking. When we don't acknowledge this negative self-talk or negative influences in our lives, it's like we have given them silent permission to continue.   When we acknowledge (callout) something for what it is and the impact it is having on us, it starts to lose power over us. It doesn't mean it will entirely go away; the volume is turned down significantly.  Here is a simple strategy that I use and teach in my programs.  Here is an example. The Effective Action Circle. Win the Day

Win The Day is a great motto and makes sense, Right? Why is it so hard to do? Why is it that our mind keeps drifting toward the goal, causing procrastination to set in? Why do we not do the daily activities that will get us to our desired result? I don't know, but what I do know that talking a lot about our goal tricks us into feeling like we already accomplished something. And then, procrastination or perfectionism starts to set in. The solution: Focus on Winning The Day.  Instead of thinking of your 25lb weight loss, think of the next exercise you will do today or tomorrow. Instead of thinking about your end of the year sales bonus, think about the next client you need to call on. Instead of worrying about how your children will turn out, think about the next time you can spend carefree time with them. What is the next step you want to do? When you focus on winning the day, some of the self-inflicted weight comes off your shoulders. When you start to apply "Next Step Thinking," it keeps you focused on Winning The Day. Next Step?
