White Belt Approach

07.03.2023

I practiced Judo for a couple of years. Judo is a martial art that combines throws with wrestling. And is referred to as the gentle way, where the goal is to use your opponent’s strength against them. Maximize efficiency and minimize effort.  Our Sensi Ed Maley drilled discipline, respeciit, and constant improvement into us.  I earned the rank of brown belt, yet the belt most impactful to me is my white belt. I still display it to remind me always to be a student.  Paradoxically, the man who has failed and one who is at the peak of success are in the same position. Each must decide what he will do next and choose the course leading him to the future.  Judo Jigoro Kano, founder of Judo  By Eric Papp

How Do You Coach?

10.02.2023

Most of us confuse coaching with advice dumping.  What you need to do is... What I would do is... Ok, let me tell you... Coaching is about raising someone's awareness level enough about a particular problem that makes them want to do something about it.  Coaching is about putting your players in the best possible position to succeed.  The greater desire the student wants to learn or get a result, the easier it is to coach. Friction comes in the way of ego. (personalities)  And about 80% of coaching is about asking questions. Below is the leading aid I hand out when speaking.

Guilt Free Exercise

30.01.2023

At times I still feel "guilty" about exercising. I'll tell myself you should be doing something else do you really need to do a 45min. Peloton ride? I should be spending time with my family. I still need to explain/validate to myself that it's good to exercise. This is usually when I discuss the benefits of exercising/mental clarity, oxygen to the brain, and compound return on time. Do you ever experience this?   by Eric Papp

In A Hurry, Busy, and Distracted

23.01.2023

In a hurry, busy, and distracted, which one is most showing up for you today? For me, it's usually "in a hurry" that I find myself in; it's like I created some fictitious clock, and there's this looming pressure of time. I've noticed that on the days that I have "all the time in the world, " I get more done and enjoy the process. I enjoy being in nature, and I've observed that nature seems to never be in a hurry, yet accomplishes so much from one season to the next.   By Eric Papp

Successful Selling Starts With Belief

17.01.2023

(image of my daughter Ellie, who grabbed my book while I was changing her diaper) The first sale is to yourself. The problem with belief and certainty is that it is not a one-time event but a muscle that needs daily training. A salesperson may start strong, have a high level of enthusiasm for their product/service, and have some successful selling, but how do they react when they hit a slump or no's start to come in? If you are not cultivating certainty and belief in yourself and what you sell, the weeds of self-doubt will eventually overtake you. And when they do, we settle for comfort, stop prospecting, and create reasons to justify our situation. BTW, Everyone is in sales. By Eric Papp

Getting Your Message Across

10.01.2023

My communication improves when I take on more responsibility in my conversations with others.  Yes, it's more work, but you will have fewer of these statements.   I don't know why they can't understand ______________ Why are people still not doing _______________ Don't they know I wanted _____________ When your message is not getting across to your children, colleagues, or clients, it's natural to blame them. You have two choices.  A. You can be right, make them wrong, and be frustrated that people aren't doing what you want them to do.  B. You can be persistently creative and keep applying different approaches until you find one that works.    by Eric Papp
